About St. Joseph ITI
A Jesuit mission of skill, service, and social transformation in the Nilgiris since 1931.
Our Journey
Nine decades of transforming lives through quality vocational education.
Founded by MEP Missionaries
St. Joseph's Industrial School was founded by the Missionary Fathers of Paris (MEP) in the hills of Ooty — a mission to uplift underprivileged youth, school dropouts, and the economically disadvantaged through free vocational education.
The Carpentry Era
The school's earliest decades centred on carpentry — equipping young men from marginalized communities with woodworking skills to meet the growing demand for skilled tradesmen across the Nilgiris region.
Fitter Courses Introduced
Through the 1960s and 1980s, fitter courses were added to address the rising industrial and mechanical needs of the era, broadening opportunities for underprivileged youth beyond traditional trades.
Welding & SCVT Affiliation
Welding courses were introduced in the 1990s to align with the booming construction and automotive industries. The school also received official SCVT (Tamil Nadu) affiliation for the Carpentry trade, and extended free education to tribal communities across the Nilgiris.
Jesuit Province & NCVT Recognition
Management passed to the Jesuit Chennai Province, continuing the rich legacy of MEP. The Welding trade simultaneously received National Council for Vocational Training (NCVT) recognition, elevating the institute's national standing.
Production Unit Launched
Launched the wood and steel production unit, enabling students to work on real-world projects while generating revenue that sustains the institution's free-education mission.
NSDC Partnership
Partnered with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) to introduce the Electrician course under the Skill India mission, adding a third nationally recognised trade.
Driving School Established
St. Joseph Industrial Driving School was established to provide motor vehicle driving training for LMV and Motor Vehicle licenses, opening new livelihood avenues for students.
Our Jesuit Values
The spirit of the Society of Jesus underpins everything at St. Joseph ITI — cura personalis, magis, and service to others.
Faith & Service
Rooted in the Jesuit tradition of service to others, we believe skill education is an act of social justice.
Excellence
We pursue excellence in all we do — teaching, training, and producing graduates who are the best in their fields.
Justice & Solidarity
Priority is given to students from marginalised communities. We stand in solidarity with the poor and disadvantaged.
Integral Development
We develop the whole person — hands, heart, and mind — not just technical skills but character and values.
